Reds roll with Rolen

"Scott Rolen hit two home runs Monday night. But the big blow was a soft liner, just over the second baseman's glove, in the 10th inning.

The hit scored Joey Votto from second base and gave the Reds a 6-5 victory over the Florida Marlins before a crowd of 10,119 at Sun Life Stadium.

"Joey made a good point," Rolen said. "He said the two home runs weren't my best two at-bats of the night. That's kind of exciting. I'll take them all. All of a sudden, I'm having a good year."

Votto led off the 10th with a walk. Brandon Phillips bunted Votto to second. Rolen got just enough of a Burke Bradenhop pitch to get over Dan Uggla's glove.

"You talk about a game of inches," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We were just hoping it was a little too high for Uggla."

Francisco Cordero pitched the ninth for his third save.

Nick Masset did the real save job in the ninth to force extra innings.

Hanley Ramirez singled with one out. Jorge Cantu walked on a 3-2. Uggla hit a groundball that Votto fielded. He looked to second then turned to first. But Masset was late covering. Bases loaded.

Ronny Paulino struck out.

Cody Ross worked the count full, so it was bases-loaded, 3-2 count, bottom of the ninth tie game.

"That's what you dream as a kid," Masset said. "Then you're doing it. My job was to go out there and put up zero. I definitely made it interesting."

The Reds go to 4-3 and have won four of five.

"It's been a big momentum swing for us," Masset said. "It was nice to get that last win at home and then to win tonight."

This one went back and forth all night.

Starter Johnny Cueto struggled through five innings but left in line for the win. He allowed four runs on nine hits. He walked one, struck out two, hit a batter, committed a balk and threw a wild pitch.

"He kept us in the game," Baker said. "My bullpen did an outstanding job, getting out of trouble."

The bullpen pitched five innings and only allowed one run.

The Reds took a 2-0 lead in the second. Rolen hit one out right-center for his second of the year. Jay Bruce followed with an opposite-field double, snapping an 0-for-17. Laynce Nix, in a spot start, got Bruce in with a single to right.

The Marlins loaded the bases with no outs in the second. But Cueto got out of it with only one run, thanks to a double play."
