"Cincinnati Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty today announced the signing of RHP Edinson Volquez to a 1-year contract through the 2011 season. Volquez was eligible for arbitration for the first time.
"We're glad we could avoid an arbitration hearing," said Jocketty. "We discussed both 1-year and multi-year deals, but both sides agreed this is the best option at this time."
Volquez, 27, was the Reds' 2008 Most Outstanding Pitcher but in August 2009 was bothered by a right elbow injury that required "Tommy John" surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament."
