When Detroit Red Wings center Darren Helm hurt his back working out off-ice on Jan. 10, he never imagined he would be dealing with the issues more than five weeks later.

Helm hasn't skated since Jan. 26, when he left midway through practice because of the pain. He has not been cleared to work out off-ice.

“I come in for treatment and then I go home to sleep,'' he said Sunday.

Helm has played only one game, on Jan. 25, and there is no time frame for when he can resume skating, let alone return to the lineup.

“I have been feeling better the last few days, looking at next week maybe doing some more physical activity and see where that takes us,'' Helm said. “Just wait and see is all I can do. That was the hardest part of me the last couple of weeks.''
