"Detroit Lions running back Kevin Smith no longer is set to have shoulder surgery.
The Lions originally planned for Smith to have surgery to tighten one of his shoulders after he got off crutches from surgery to repair a torn knee ligament.
Coach Jim Schwartz was asked today at the NFL scouting combine whether the Lions' doctors originally wanted Smith to have surgery but Smith sought a second opinion.
"It was just assumed, 'OK, well, it's going to need to be done,' " Schwartz said. "And then things change, because as the year goes on and he's able to play with it without having another issue with it, and then you get looks at new tests and strength and all those kind of things … yeah, that ended up changing things, yes.""
