The Tampa Bay Rays added what they believe will be a key piece to the back of the bullpen Monday when they acquired right-hander Jesse Crain from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for players to be named later or cash considerations.

Crain currently on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain will give manager Joe Maddon another option to go with Joel Peralta Jake McGee and Alex Torres as he builds the bridge to closer Fernando Rodney.

"You look at his numbers this year they're pretty impressive" Maddon said. "Historically he's been really really good on right-handed hitters although he can get a lefty out too. But this guy can be death on righties. He's been competing and pitching at a really high level this year.

"He's the kind of guy who definitely definitely picks up your bullpen and can really shorten a game for you."

Brandon Gomes rehabbing from a right lat strain was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room on the 40-man roster for Crain.

It's not yet clear when Crain will return to the mound. He was supposed to throw a bullpen session last Thursday but it was cancelled when he had what was reported to be a mild setback.
