Ray Whitney has been playing through a stress fracture in his foot since the Minnesota game, and it finally became too "broken" to take after Friday night's game.

So, the veteran winger has been placed on IR, and the Stars are expected to sit him out for 4-6 weeks to let the broken bone heal. We'll see what happens with Whitney, as he is a tenacious competitor and he will likely be trying to get back in the lineup sooner, but he said that the past couple of games taught him that things do have to heal properly.

"I could put my weight on it, and it wasn't a problem," he said. "But I found with other people leaning on me or putting their weight on it, it got worse. So I have to let it heal and let it get better."

The move of Whitney to IR meant the recall of rookie Reilly Smith, who many assume will be playing in the top six forward group. However, I'm hearing the coaching staff is considering putting captain Brenden Morrow back in the top six to see how he responds. The coaches have been impressed with his intensity in taking a smaller role, and are expected to switch the top six to see if they can find the right combination.
