Rangers will be patient with injured Francisco

"The Texas Rangers want right-handed reliever Frank Francisco fully healthy if the team makes it to the playoffs. As the primary setup man this season, Francisco has been a valuable asset. And the Rangers will be cautious in dealing with Francisco's latest setback. He headed to the disabled list Saturday with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle in his back."I don't know when I'll be back," said Francisco, who has a 2.13 ERA since the All-Star break. "They told me to take my time so I can be ready for the postseason."Francisco does not have a timetable, but will stay in Texas this week to receive treatment.Even if, for some reason, Francisco isn't able to return this season, the Rangers are unlikely to add right-handed prospect Tanner Scheppers to replace him. Scheppers has struggled of late with Triple A Oklahoma City, and adding him would require a 40-man roster move.Regardless, the Rangers believe Francisco should be ready to go for the playoffs. He can come off the disabled list Sept. 12, and the Rangers plan to use Darren O'Day and Darren Oliver as eighth-inning setup relievers in his absence. At the latest, the team would like Francisco to be ready with at least a week remaining in the regular season.Asked if the final week would be enough time for Francisco to regain his form, Rangers manager Ron Washington said: "No doubt about it. I think being a short guy, he doesn't have to be stretched out. We can simulate games for him with one or two innings when he's ready to throw. We just have to see how it progresses, so we know exactly what we're dealing with.""
