"The blockbuster trade this year in baseball was made July 9, when the Texas Rangers acquired Cliff Lee from Seattle to enhance the chances at their first playoff berth since 1999.That was the second of five trades by general manager Jon Daniels in two months. The last was made Aug. 31 with only a few hours to spare to get Jeff Francoeur on the Rangers' postseason roster.Lee's role in the postseason is to dominate his opponent and give the Rangers a chance to win any series. Francoeur's task: Make them better against left-handed pitching. The Mariners are hardly a playoff team, but consider the performances of Lee, Francoeur and two other players acquired in trades part of the blueprint for playoff success.Lee allowed one run in eight innings, Francoeur had a two-run single against lefty Jason Vargas, and even Bengie Molina and Jorge Cantu made key contributions as the Rangers won 6-1 at Safeco Field on Saturday night."That's what we brought them in for," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "They've been contributing. It might not say so in the numbers, but there's more than just what you do on the field that helps the team."They've been good clubhouse guys. They're veterans. For their sake, I'm glad they were able to break out, but tonight belonged to Cliff Lee."The victory, coupled with an Oakland loss at Minnesota, dropped the Rangers' magic number for clinching the American League West title to six and pushed their lead back to 10 games.Lee won for a second consecutive start after taking 11 days to rest tightness in his lower back. He allowed a leadoff hit to Ichiro Suzuki, but didn't allow another hit until the fifth, when Seattle mounted its only threat against him."
