"Cody Seals, a 37-year-old from Joshua, remembers the time he and his 11-year-old son, Austin, met Josh Hamilton before a game at Rangers Ballpark. Hamilton chatted with them for a few minutes and autographed an item for Austin.
After learning about Hamilton's second known relapse in his ongoing battle with drug and alcohol addiction, Seals still supports the Texas Rangers star outfielder. The father and son both wore Hamilton jerseys to the Rangers Winter Caravan stop at Academy Sports and Outdoors on Friday night, hours after Hamilton made a statement regarding his latest relapse.
"Everybody makes mistakes," Seals said. "I don't know what else to say. I'm still a huge fan, and like and respect him."
Seals wasn't alone in giving his support to Hamilton. All of the fans expressed similar views, and are hopeful that Hamilton can get through his troubling time.
Emily Cates, a 24-year-old from Arlington, called herself an "emotional wreck" since the news broke of Hamilton drinking alcohol at a Dallas-area bar on Monday night.
"I'm just heartbroken," Cates said. "I'm not angry, and not upset. I feel bad for him. It's really, really hard because when you grow up with a sports team, you kind of feel like they are family. I know how much of a struggle it can be, and it is really hard to see him go through it."
Said Bryan Cook, a 48-year-old from Burleson: "I don't know him, but I know he's got some personal problems he's trying to deal with. People have good days, and people have bad days. I just think he has a lot of guts to stand up and have a press conference after that. I think what he said is as much as we need to know. The rest is between him, his family and the Rangers.""
