Rangers decline to offer salary arbitration to Vladimir Guerrero

"The Rangers won't offer Vladimir Guerrero salary arbitration. The reason they are doing this is because they want to keep him. Sounds odd? Keep reading.

Before we go any further, the Rangers are offering arbitration to Cliff Lee, which was completely expected, and Frank Francisco. The players have until Nov. 30 to decide if to accept the offers or continue to test the market. If they accept, they are under the club's control and would go through the normal January-February arbitration process that players with between three and six years of service engage in. If the players decline, the Rangers would receive compensatory draft picks if Lee or Francisco sign elsewhere.

The Rangers did not offer arbitration to Bengie Molina or Guerrero. The Rangers are open to both returning, but are more significantly pursuing Guerrero.

By declining to offer arbitration, the Rangers are forgoing the possibility of receiving two draft picks of compensation for Guerrero. But there may be a common sense reason for doing this."
