With 30 games left in the regular season, the Carolina Hurricanes can't afford to come out slow.

That's what they did Thursday night, in one of the Canes more regrettable losses of the season.

The Canes slipped and the Toronto Maple Leafs made them pay in a 3-0 shutout at the Air Canada Centre.

"I don't like the way we moved the puck all night," said Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice, who said "close" when asked if the Canes gave enough effort early.

"We didn't play well enough," Maurice said. "That's my responsibility.

"If we looked past this one, shame on us. I don't think we did."
