Ramirez's back is improving, but manager Edwin Rodriguez on Wednesday wasn't sure whether Ramirez would be ready Friday for the start of a four-game series against the Brewers. If Ramirez needs more time, Rodriguez said that would likely prompt the Marlins to make a roster move.

With Johnson on the disabled list and the Marlins carrying nine relievers, they have a short bench. Emilio Bonifacio is the only serviceable shortstop on the roster."
