Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has likened Raheem Sterling's pre-season form to that of Lionel Messi.

The teenager enjoyed a superb campaign for the Reds last time out, scoring 10 times and was rewarded with a spot in England's World Cup squad.

His performances in Brazil were one bright spark for the Three Lions and he has returned to club football in similar fashion.

Sterling scored a cracking goal in the pre-season draw with Manchester City in the United States and Rodgers has likened the goal to the great Barcelona man.

The Reds boss told the Liverpool Echo: "When you look at the finish against Manchester City in New York, how many times have we seen Messi produce a touch like that? Taking it through bodies when it's so tight in the box.
