Standing on first base in the top of the 10th inning, Chase Headley had given himself the green light. To be sure, he looked for the green light from manager Bud Black, who gave him a little wink and a nod.

Interestingly, too, one other guy had given Headley the green light.

Carlos Quentin.

"We've talked about it," said Quentin. "I've told Chase, "If you're in position to go, go."

Headley went. His steal of second base set up the game-winning hit, an opposite-field smash into the gap by Quentin for a double that enabled Headley to score easily for an 8-7 triumph over the Houston Astros. The Padres started off this 10-game road trip with not only a win, but a bit of bravura as well.

"Him getting into scoring position," said Quentin, "was the big play of the game."
