"The Blackhawks' response to the scary hit on Ben Smith might not have been what fans wanted to see, but coach Joel Quenneville was OK with what happened with Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brendan Smith.

After Brendan Smith clipped Ben Smith in the head, leaving the Hawks forward motionless on the ice, Dave Bolland slashed the defenseman and followed him to the boards, where a minor scrum ensued.

"There's not too much you can do," Quenneville said.

"I think everybody knows that supplemental discipline is part of that. What else are you going to do? You want to be the one that's going next, and you're suspended as well?"
