"According to police, Cincinnati Bengals running back Cedric Benson approached a former roommate at an Austin street corner at 5 a.m. Sunday, and repeatedly struck him in the face with a closed fist.

Benson was charged Sunday with misdemeanor assault with injury, not assault causing bodily injury to a family member, as previously reported.

An arrest affadavit obtained by KXAN Austin states that the former roommate was standing at the corner of Fifth and Guadalupe streets talking on a cellphone Benson approached, saying they "needed to talk about their problems."

The former roommate said "all of a sudden he was struck on his face with a closed fist throw by Benson."

Police said the man, who claimed to have been repeatedly punched by Benson, was bleeding from the mouth, complaining of "possible loss of teeth and massive swelling of the left cheek.""
