Red Devils executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is confident of signing Sweden international Lindelof for less than the player's £37.8m release clause.

United have held an initial round of negotiations with representatives of the Portuguese club although the final terms of the deal have yet to be agreed.

The 22-year-old has been watched by United scouts on a number of occasions this season, and growing interest in the player has persuaded Jose Mourinho to move for him now rather than wait until the summer.

Benfica signed Lindelof from his home town club of Vasteras in Sweden in 2012 for around £42,000 and stand to make a significant profit on the youngster.
