"Conventional wisdom said the Pistons would take a big man.
That doesn't apply during this NBA draft. The Pistons selected Kentucky guard Brandon Knight with the eighth pick Thursday.
Knight, a 6-foot-3 guard who spent one year at Lexington, wasn't expected to be around for the Pistons. The teams ahead of them started a flurry of activity and unexpected picks, which left Knight available.
Knight, 19, averaged 17.3 points and 4.2 assists during his lone season at Kentucky, and was an All-SEC second-team selection. He shot 42 percent from the field and 37 from the 3-point line. His 87 3-pointers were a Kentucky freshman record.
He was expected to go third to Utah, but the Jazz soured on him in recent days and went with Kentucky center Enes Kanter.
In the second round, the Piston drafted Duke forward Kyle Singler with the 33rd overall pick.
The Charlotte Bobcats made a move hours before the draft that put them ahead of the Pistons, after initially having the ninth selection. With the seventh pick they selected Bismack Biyombo, who many folks felt would wind up in Detroit.
Texas' Tristan Thompson was expected to be around, but the Cleveland Cavaliers took him fourth. Thompson and Biyombo were in Auburn Hills for a workout Monday, and it was believed the Pistons wouldfrom the two. "
