"While the NBA lockout doesn't appear to be headed to a conclusion anytime soon, one of the few issues that have been resolved is the amnesty clause.
The clause, first introduced in the 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement, allows a team to rid itself of one contract without any salary cap hit. The player will become a free agent, but the team is still responsible for paying off his contract.
The Pistons certainly aren't in any salary-cap trouble. In 2009-10, they were 27th in payroll; last season, they were 21st.
As of now, with Tayshaun Prince coming off the books ($11.1 million), along with Rodney Stuckey and Jonas Jerebko being restricted free agents, the Pistons have a little more than $43.33 million committed for next season. After factoring in Brandon Knight's expected rookie-scale contract, it should rise to around $46 million."
