Brandon Phillips told second base umpire Ed Hickox that someone could get hurt rounding second after the Pittsburgh grounds crew dumped some quick dry compound to the shortstop side of the base to soak up the rainwater.

"It was smooth everywhere else," Phillips said. "They just piled it up there."

In the third inning, Phillips inadvertently proved his point. He stumbled as he rounded second on this way to third on Wilson Valdez's single.

"Wouldn't you know it would be me?" Phillips said.

He was laughing, but it could have been no-laughing matter. Phillips said he felt something grab in his groin as he stumbled. He left the game after the top of the sixth.
