Philip Rivers becomes coach for campers

"Nine-year-old Kandy is a foster child. She's moved four times in the last year, still waiting for a permanent home and family.

She's never played sports. Never thrown a football. But Saturday, not only did Kandy catch a pass, but she made an interception. An interception off none other than Philip Rivers, quarterback for the San Diego Chargers.

"It was fun," she said with a wide, toothy grin.

Kandy was one of more than 300 children who participated in the Philip Rivers Football Camp this weekend at the University of California San Diego. In its second year, the two-day camp gives kids a chance to learn football fundamentals from professional coaches and players.

And of course, it wouldn't be a Philip Rivers camp without a little friendly competition, so the children play on teams at the end of each day.

"I hope they leave learning something about football they didn't know, but really I just want them leaving with a great memory," Rivers said. "They get to come out and play, and it gives them confidence. Football is more than just a game. You learn life lessons, discipline, how to follow directions, toughness."

On Sunday, with the sun shining and music blasting from speakers, Rivers coached, encouraged and instructed, making it a point to interact with every child on the field. Throughout the two days, he learned most of the campers' names. He did his best to throw everyone a pass.

"He's a really nice guy," said O'shea Moore, 13, of Carmel Valley. "It seems like he really cares about everyone here and wants us to do well."

As 12-year-old Markus Hager readied himself for a running drill, Rivers walked over and corrected his stance. From the look on Markus' face, it might as well have been Christmas."
