Philbin's Packer power gave him edge over McCoy for Dolphins' job

"Coaches talk about implementing a system to fit their personnel. Mike McCoy is the rare NFL offensive coordinator who had the gumption to do it.

The success of the Broncos' read-option offense with quarterback Tim Tebow helped make McCoy a finalist for the Miami Dolphins' head coaching position.

But it appears ingenuity lost out to production as the Dolphins on Friday night gave the job to Joe Philbin, the offensive coordinator of the high-powered Green Bay Packers.

"I appreciate the opportunity Mr. Ross and the Miami Dolphins gave me," McCoy said. "I am very fortunate to work for the Denver Broncos. We have a great job here. Our family loves living in Denver."

McCoy interviewed 16 hours with the Dolphins between Thursday in New York and at his home in the Denver-area Friday. He was widely considered the front-runner for the job, but tapping into the Packers' offensive success was difficult for Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to pass up.

The Packers, with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, averaged an NFL-best 35 points per game while posting a 15-1 record during the regular season. The Broncos, who started Kyle Orton for five games at quarterback and Tebow for 11, ranked 25th with 19.3 points per game, but won the AFC West and defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in a first-round playoff game."
