In the final stages of a very tight AL East pennant race, the Yankees are clearing a rotation spot for a 40-year-old lefty who has pitched 30 big league games since the beginning of the 2010 season.

Not only that, the Yankees hope Tuesday night's assignment against the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium is the first of four regular-season starts Andy Pettitte makes for them.

Following a discussion Thursday involving general manager Brian Cashman, Dr. Chris Ahmad, trainer Steve Donohue and manager Joe Girardi, the decision to start Pettitte was made.
