The Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will announce a contract extension for coach Pete Carroll on Friday, league sources confirmed Thursday night.

The team announced a news conference for 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday. No reason for the event was given.

Carroll was entering the final year of the five-year, $35 million deal he signed in 2010 to leave USC and become coach of the Seahawks. He led the franchise to its first Super Bowl championship in February. Carroll said several times during the 2013 season that he had no concerns about his contract situation with the Seahawks.

There was speculation that Friday's news conference could be to announce a contract extension for free safety Earl Thomas. Those rumors were fueled by a Thursday night tweet from Thomas that said "GOD you're so good!!"
