Perry, Getzlaf play by Team Canada's book

"Since he began moonlighting as coach of the most famous hockey team in the world, Mike Babcock has kept a notebook on all things Team Canada.

Scouting reports, notes on players, projected line combinations, random thoughts fill what Babcock refers to as simply The Book.

In the hours after the U.S. upset of Team Canada on Sunday, Babcock came across notes on forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry, another reminder the Ducks' pair of young stars had not lived up pre-Olympic expectations.

That Team Canada is just a semifinal victory against Slovakia on Friday from reaching the Olympic Games gold medal game is due in no small part to the fact that Getzlaf and Perry are finally going by The Book.

Perry scored a pair of goals and Getzlaf added a goal and two assists in a 7-3 demolition of Russia in a Wednesday quarterfinal.

The pair's physical play from the opening minutes helped set the tone for arguably the most impressive and dominant performance in Olympic hockey history.

"They can do it all out there and they showed it last night," Canada's superstar forward Sidney Crosby said Thursday night, referring to the Anaheim Ducks duo, who play on the same line for Team Canada. "They were hard to handle. They were really tough, man."

That is why Babcock was so frustrated with the pair's play through the first three games of the Olympic tournament.

"We've had some real wars with Anaheim the last three years," said Babcock, referring to his regular job as Detroit Red Wings coach. "And those guys have been really tough. Every game they've played really hard and I expected the same here.""
