Samantha "Sam" Quek is a British field hockey player. She plays as a defender for both England and Great Britain's field hockey teams, wearing lucky/unlucky number 13. She won gold as part of the British team at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Away from the pitch, Sam popularity soared in November when she signed onto the UK Celebrity Game Show “I’m a Celebrity get Me Out of Here", spoilers, she finished 4th.

She plays club Hockey for Holcombe, Sam won her first cap in 2008 while she was still at university and has gone on to represent her country a total of 50 times. She was also part of the side that took silver at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the same year that she first captained the team. All the more sweeter, after she was one of the final cuts from the 2012 London Olympic roster.

Following a Russian hack of records from the World Anti-Doping Agency, Sam took a stand over the issue of Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs), which allow athletes to use certain medications such as the inhaler. Quek used an inhaler as a teenager and had had strong thoughts on how important it was to separate common life-saving medications and performance enhancing drugs.

“The public are being led down a road that TUE’s are now being associated with being a cheat, or dirty. My real worry is in future Olympic cycles there will be a hockey girl like me, chasing her Olympic dream and pushing her body to its limit. She will become out of breath due to asthma and will need an inhaler, not to get an unfair sporting advantage, but to breathe, to make sure she doesn’t die. Yet she will think twice about using one, or perhaps use it and feel guilty about doing so. Or worst still, refuse to use it completely. “TUEs aren’t about cheating. They are essential, sometimes even life-saving medical practices and should be viewed as such.” - Telegraph

There’s nothing to disagree with in that quote.

You can learn a little bit more about the Olympic gold medalist in this video from her Facebook page, which is basically a promo for her appearance on the UK celebrity show - that I admit I know absolutely nothing about. I’m going to guess it has something to do with the jungle?
