One ball after another was slapped into right field, and Hunter Pence viewed this as a victory.

His goal during batting practice Saturday was to hit the ball the opposite way, a process he said had helped him in the past.

He'd been working too hard, he said, and this was his way of simplifying.

Once the game started, however, his approach wouldn't change.

"I'm always going to be ready to hit," Pence said. "It's what got me here, it's why I succeed. If I don't take an aggressive swing, I'm probably not going to get the homers or the big hits that I get."
