"Carlos Peña is headed to the Chicago Cubs after the former Rays first baseman agreed to a one-year, $10 million deal.
Not a bad payday for Peña, whose .196 batting average was the lowest in the major leagues among everyday players in 2010.
The Cubs are hoping Peña can find his swing inside the friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
The 32-year-old Peña is hoping to parlay his deal with the Cubs into another big contract. The one-year deal him to become a free agent again after next season.
The Rays had interest in re-signing Peña, though for a lot less than the Cubs are giving him.
Peña spent the last four seasons with Tampa Bay. He had a down year in 2010 with 28 homers and 84 RBIs to go with his sub-.200 batting average. That was down from a .227 average with 39 homers and 100 RBIs the previous year, when he was selected for the AL All-Star team and won a Gold Glove for his defense."
