New Orleans Pelicans Coach Monty Williams will be joining the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team as an assistant coach, USA basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo announced in a release Monday afternoon. Considered one of the top young defensive coaches in the NBA, Williams will work the next three years under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Williams will replace Los Angeles Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni, while Chicago Bulls Coach Tom Thibodeau will be replacing former Portland Trail Blazers Coach Nate McMillan. The official announcement of the hirings is expected to occur Monday afternoon. The Pelicans will hold a news conference at 3:30 today involving Williams, the team announced.

``Circumstances change for individuals and it was time to make some coaching staff changes,'' Colangelo said in a statement. ``We're excited about the coaches we have coming on board. ``I think we have assembled another outstanding coaching staff, one that I believe will continue to lead our program to success on the court and off. Coaches Thibodeau and Williams are outstanding additions to our staff, and both of them have already made their mark on the league.''

D'Antoni and McMillan had been assistants under Krzyzewski on Team USA since 2005 and they won two gold medals. With their departures, the only holdover from Krzyzewski's previous staff is Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim.
