"Jake Peavy didn't ask for an extra day of rest after pitching four innings of relief on June 25 so he could make three starts before the end of the first half.
But, like the rest of his Chicago White Sox's teammates, Peavy didn't feel right Sunday after allowing 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-3 loss to Minnesota that concluded the Sox's miserable first half with a 44-48 record.
"I thought physically I'd be better to bounce back better than I have, and that's just the bottom line," said Peavy, who was 0-2 with a 7.72 ERA in his final three starts. "No ifs, ands about buts about it. My body has not bounced back. It's not hard to see.
"I'm throwing 85-90 mph with my fastball. My breaking balls aren't sharp, I can't even strike anybody out with it. Certainly not characteristic, not what I've had in times past, even when I came back here."
Peavy, who suffered a detached latissimus dorsi muscle 12 months ago, will visit an Alabama-based therapist that helped him with his recovery last winter.
"I'm 100 percent positive I'm going to come in on the back end of this rotation to give me a week to 10 days off to try to regroup and get ready to start whatever, every five to six days," Peavy said. "I look forward to just getting a little bit of my feet under me. I never felt like I could do that this last three (starts)."
This means that Peavy might not make his next start until after the Detroit series that starts Friday. He is scheduled to pitch in the series finale on July 17."
