Patrick Sharp named All-Star Game MVP

"When the NHL revealed in November the 100 players on the voting ballot for the 2011 NHL All-Star Game, Patrick Sharp's name was nowhere to be found.

Following Sunday's effort during which the Blackhawks forward had a goal and two assists, Sharp's name can now be located alongside those having captured most valuable player honors in an All-Star Game.

Sharp and Hawks teammates Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane filled the scoresheet in a high-flying contest that featured little defense as Team Lidstrom outgunned Team Staal 11-10 in front of a crowd of 18,680 at RBC Center.

Playing on Team Staal and coached by the Hawks' Joel Quenneville and assistant Mike Haviland, Sharp swayed voters with plenty of offense early, including assists in the first period and a goal off a nice feed from linemate Claude Giroux in the second.

"I guess I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bothered by it," Sharp said of the ballot snub. "But it was motivation to play well this year. The Blackhawks have a ton of big names and great players and a lot of guys that deserve to be here. I'm proud to be a Blackhawk in the All-Star Game and things worked out."

Toews also had a goal and two assists while Kane and Keith each added assists for Team Lidstrom. Loui Eriksson had two goals and two assists, Danny Briere and Anze Kopitar two goals and Shea Weber four assists to help Team Lidstrom rally from an early four-goal deficit.

"(Sharp's) probably one of the most underrated players in the league," Kane said. "He's definitely making a name for himself with the playoff run last year and he's having a great year this year too. It's good for him, he deserves it."

Sharp, who was presented a car for being named MVP, is the third Hawks player to win the award and first since Eric Daze in 2002. Hall of Famer Bobby Hull did it in 1970 and '71."
