Following Wednesday's morning skate at the Pepsi Center the Avalanche moved its head coach's press conference to the big room. The small room is usually used for regular-season games but with Patrick Roy now at the Colorado helm and Anaheim's Teemu Selanne set to begin his 22nd and final NHL season at age 43 a media gathering of Stanley Cup proportions forced the Avs have Roy speak in the cafeteria.

"We want to surprise the world of hockey" Roy said of his goal in his first NHL coaching position. "It starts tonight."

Television crews and print reporters from Roy's hometown of Quebec Canada and Selanne's native Finland were on hand to document Wednesday's opener against the Ducks and Avs. The amount of media in the Avs' locker room certainly made it a playoff-type atmosphere — harkening memories of when Roy led Colorado to the playoffs in seven of his eight years with the club.
