As the Red Sox begin the process of sifting through the rubble of their lost season, they already have drawn one conclusion: David Ortiz is part of the solution, not the problem.

But, as usual, it isn't that simple.

For a second consecutive year, Ortiz will enter the offseason with an expiring contract, leaving him free to test the market. And because the slugging designated hitter would rather not make this an annual right, he will continue to prioritize getting the multiyear contract that eluded him last year, whether it comes from the Red Sox or from another team.
