"Derek Anderson knew when the Carolina Panthers signed him that his primary duty was to mentor young quarterbacks Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen.
A former Pro Bowl quarterback at Cleveland, Anderson is familiar with the system being installed by coordinator Rob Chudzinski, and though he completed three of four passes for 71 yards and a touchdown Saturday against the Giants, he isn't expected to move out of the No. 3 quarterback spot.
"It's been different, but I have a lot that I can help them with," Anderson said. "I think right now that's my role and I'm willing to do it.
"I've had fun. Both of them are good guys. We have good talk in meetings and on the field."
Recently, Arizona Cardinals quarterback John Skelton criticized Anderson, saying he and Matt Leinart didn't do much mentoring last year when Skelton and Max Hall were on the roster.
"I can't blame them for the way they acted and the way they treated us," Skelton told Phoenix radio station KTAR. "I guess when you're set in your ways, it's hard to change."
Asked Monday about Skelton's comments, Anderson said he wasn't aware of what his former teammate had said about him."
