The San Diego Padres asked for big Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Alex Verdugo in talks regarding fine lefty reliever Brad Hand, sources tell FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman and Robert Murray.
This goes along with the Padres’ earlier request for top infield prospect Gleyber Torres from the Yankees, a team also in talks for Hand.
There’s no likelihood seen of the Dodgers doing this, just as the Yankees didn’t do it.
Hand, an All-Star and one of the better lefties on the trade market after thriving in San Diego, should draw a better return than one might think based on supply and demand of lefty relievers. But at least in the early stage the Padres are shooting for some of the best prospects in the game.
The Nats are yet another big-market, contending team eying Hand. Close to 10 teams are believed to have shown interest, with the Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Chicago Cubs and several other contenders hoping to augment their pens.
