Oswalt helps his own cause in rout

"Roy Oswalt doesn't remind 21st-century Phillies fans of current teammate Cliff Lee at the plate.

He won't have older supporters reminiscing about former slugging pitchers in pinstripes Robert Person or Rick Wise.

Oswalt's batting practice swings often are Little League-esque.

He takes a similar approach running the bases.

But, let's face it: He's getting paid $16 million this season for his right arm to get opposing batters out.

On Saturday night, Oswalt took a second significant step forward after missing six weeks with back problems. He allowed three runs and six hits in seven innings of the Phillies' 11-3 win over the Nationals.

The Phils took advantage of a Citizens Bank Park flower-bed special from Ryan Howard plus three Washington errors that led to six unearned runs.

Despite Howard's four RBIs running his National League-leading total to 95,

Oswalt's effort in the third inning was the highlight offensively.

The Phillies already had scored twice runs to take a 4-2 lead when Oswalt stepped in with two outs and the bases loaded.

After the right-hander took a healthy hack (and missed) at a 3-1 fastball, he took the next pitch from Nats starter John Lannan for an RBI walk.

The .150 hitter then hustled to second to beat the throw from Washington shortstop Ian Desmond on Jimmy Rollins' grounder in the hole, allowing Carlos Ruiz to score. Wilson Valdez raced home from second on the play to push the cushion to 7-2.

"I told Charlie, 'Speed don't slump,'" Oswalt joked."
