The Baltimore Orioles have announced that they've acquired catcher Nick Hundley from the Padres in exchange for pitcher Troy Patton. The move is immediate, as Patton was reportedly saying goodbye to teammates Saturday morning while infielder Steve Lombardozzi was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.

Hundley, 30, is hitting .271/.271/.373 with three doubles, a homer and three RBI in 59 at-bats this season. In 114 games last year, he hit .233/.290/.389 with 19 doubles, 13 homers and 44 RBI.

The move for Hundley could be spun as a depth move, but it's rather easy to connect it to the health issues of All-Star catcher Matt Wieters. Wieters is on the disabled list with an elbow injury and will have to undergo Tommy John surgery if he's still feeling discomfort by July 1. He had a platelet-rich plasma injection earlier this week and still hopes to avoid the surgery.
