O.J. Mayo leads Memphis Grizzlies over Charlotte, 113-80

"O.J. Mayo launched a 3-point shot and the basketball bounced around the rim three times before it finally fell through as the Grizzlies' guard flashed a sheepish grin.

Mayo's basket was more emphatic moments later when he wrapped the ball around his back and tossed in a lefty layup that finished a fast break.

The Grizzlies gave a crowd of 12,219 a little bit of this and a little bit of that in terms of showmanship Wednesday night. And in between their Harlem Globetrotter-like routines, the Griz gave the Charlotte Bobcats the business defensively throughout a 113-80 victory in FedExForum.

The pummeling accounted for the Grizzlies' fourth straight win and their second-largest margin of victory in franchise history.

Memphis (12-14) turned a four-point lead after the first period into a 59-36 advantage by halftime. The Griz kept extending the lead in the third period behind steals, break-away dunks and layups and Mayo's hot hand. Charlotte (9-16) got no closer than 17 points in the second half.

"We made a point that we can't get off to a slow start," Griz point guard Mike Conley said. "We're not a team that can't afford to play from 10, 12 behind starting the second quarter. We want to try to make our mark early and make teams play at our pace."

The Griz lived in transition and ran the Bobcats ragged. That was the strategy given that Charlotte played the night before and was without its second-leading scorer, Gerald Wallace, who didn't play because of a sprained left ankle."
