Oilers bring Josh Green back into the fold

"After touring the NHL and the American Hockey League, with a couple of side trips to Europe, Josh Green is returning to the Edmonton Oilers organization.

The 33-year-old journeyman signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Oilers on Sunday, the first of the depth signings that general manager Steve Tambellini wanted to tend to in the coming days.

Green will be pencilled in for a trip to the Oklahoma City Barons, where he'll provide the farm team with size and toughness, but he has enough NHL experience to step in as a substitute forward.

"I understand it's an uphill battle for me to stick there but, hopefully, I can get a few games in to see what I can do at the NHL level again," said Green, a native of Camrose who now calls Winnipeg home.

"Just the chance to go to camp back home is exciting."

Since he was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1996 entry draft, the six-foot-three, 215-pounder has played a total of 334 NHL games with the Oilers, Anaheim Ducks, Kings, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks. During his travels, he collected 74 points and 199 penatly minutes.

Last season, Green played 12 games with the Ducks and 69 with the Syracuse Crunch, upping his AHL totals to 335 games. In the AHL, he's scored 212 career points while racking up 341 penalty minutes.

"I think it would have been pretty much impossible to envision a journey like the one I've been on. It's been a new place almost every year," said Green, who played 81 games with the Oilers over two seasons — 2001-02 and '02-03 — before he was dealt to the Rangers."
