"While the Twitter world was abuzz with the Yankees reportedly claiming Carlos Pena on waivers, that certainly doesn't mean he's going anywhere.
Almost every player on every team goes through the waiver process in August, but most either go unclaimed or their teams pull them back. Pena is believed to be among the latter group, unless interim general manager Randy Bush gets an offer he can't refuse. That's unlikely.
Pena signed a unique contract last winter to get him to the Cubs, who didn't have much money to spend. He took $5 million during the season and $5 million before January 2012, so the Cubs are still on the hook for a bunch.
Plus, there's no guarantee he won't be back next season, because the Cubs don't have a top prospect waiting to take over at first base. Bryan LaHair is at Triple-A Iowa hitting .335, but the 28-year-old certainly is not considered the "future.""
