For the first time since 2012, Notre Dame is in the national title conversation. That season, they lost 42-14 to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

After a huge win against USC this past Saturday, Notre Dame seems to be in the driver's seat for a College Football Playoff bid. Wins over North Carolina State and Miami would pad an already impressive resume for the Fighting Irish, whose only loss on the season was to Georgia by a single point.

They currently sit at No. 9 in the latest AP rankings behind fellow one-loss teams Ohio State and Clemson. But surely their destiny is still in their own hands, right?

Not so fast, my friends.

Due to Notre Dame's status as an FBS Independent, they lack the benefit of having a conference title game to boost their win total and strength of schedule.
