Northern Illinois will put its 26-game home stadium winning streak on the line when it hosts Presbyterian in a Thursday night season-opening game on Aug. 28.

But the Huskies’ greater challenge will come in the following three weeks when they travel to Northwestern, UNLV and Arkansas.

The school with the longest home stadium winning streak in the country announced its 2014 schedule on Friday. NIU finished the regular season 12-0 last year before losing the Mid-American Conference championship game to Bowling Green, 47-27, and the Poinsettia Bowl, 21-14, to Utah State.

The Huskies won seven road games last year.

"(The schedule) is similar to last year,” NIU coach Rod Carey said in a statement. “We have to prove our mettle on the road and certainly no one is going to feel bad for us. I’m excited about having three straight home games in October (Kent State, Central Michigan and Miami of Ohio). And we’re going to want to see Huskie Stadium packed for every home game. Four of the last five on the road will test us as a team; we look forward to the challenge.”

NIU has advanced to the MAC Championship game four years in a row. The Huskies return 46 letter-winners and 14 starters. But Heisman Trophy finalist quarterback Jordan Lynch has graduated and he hopes to make an NFL roster.

Spring practices begin March 18. The Huskie Bowl spring game is slated for April 19.
