The Dutch international spent three years at Manchester City and was a target for the Reds during the January transfer window with midfield enforcer Lucas on the sidelines with a knee ligament injury.

Liverpool's move for De Jong failed to materialise before the deadline, but manager Brendan Rodgers was eyeing a potential summer move for the midfielder.

However Rodgers' hopes of attracting De Jong to Anfield looked to have been dashed after the 29-year-old confirmed his intention to remain with the Serie A outfit.

"I want to try and stay at Milan for another four or five years," De Jong said.
