"Twice this week, cornerback Adam Jones attempted to enter alcohol treatment centers on his own.
But the NFL stepped in and will find a treatment center it deems suitable for the two-time suspended player.
On Tuesday, Jones was suspended for at least four games for violations of the NFL's conduct policy. Police were called when Jones fought with his bodyguard in a hotel bathroom last week.
After league officials investigated the incident, it was determined Jones needs counseling. If he is able to complete a treatment program or show significant progress when he applies for reinstatement next month, it could help his chances to return to the NFL.
For each game Jones misses, the Cowboys must pay the NFL $20,588 up to a maximum of $200,000.
As part of the league's personal conduct policy, teams are required to pay the league the "salary forfeited by players who are suspended without pay under the personal conduct, substance abuse or steroids policy, beginning with a team's second such suspension of a league year."
In September, practice squad wide receiver Mike Jefferson was suspended four games by the league for violating the league's policy on anabolic steroids and related substances.
Jones has a base salary of $700,000 this season."
