Newcastle United are hoping to tie up a permanent deal with Borussia Dortmund to land Spanish Under-21 midfielder Mikel Merino.

The holding central midfielder is deemed as a potential partner in midfield for Jonjo Shelvey and his arrival should see Henri Saivet’s short stint on Tyneside come to a swift end.

Saivet has been told to train with the Under-23s and his agent has been instructed to find him a new club to ease the club’s huge wage bill.

The Senegal midfielder’s exit will clear £35,000 per week and smooth the arrival of Merino with Rafa Benitez told that the squad size and wage bill must be reduced.
