"The sight of Trent Hunter in a Kings uniform went from foreign concept to curious reality Wednesday, when the longtime New York Islanders forward made his preseason debut against the Phoenix Coyotes at Staples Center.
The forward, wearing number 47 for the first time in his career - Rob Scuderi owns the number 7 jersey Hunter had worn since 2004 - debuted at right wing on a line with Jordan Nolan and Andrei Loktionov.
When Long Beach native Ray Macias became one of the Kings' first 11 training camp cuts Wednesday, it left Hunter as the only tryout player in camp with NHL experience.
After being limited to 17 games last season with the Islanders, Hunter said he had a few other camp invites.
"I sat down with my agent (Brad Devine) and we just figured this would be the best fit," he said.
Hunter can provide a physical presence from the right wing at 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, but he also brings some scoring touch. He had never scored fewer than 11 goals in his first six NHL campaigns - all with the Islanders - until a season-ending knee ligament injury ended his 2010-11 season on Nov. 24.
In 459 career NHL games, Hunter has 99 goals, 229 points and 201 penalty minutes."
