University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketball coach Brian Wardle has agreed to a five-year contract, athletic director Mary Ellen Gillespie announced Thursday.

The deal replaces the three years Wardle had left on his current contract.

Gillespie said last month she was happy with Wardle’s performance in her first season on the job. The possibility existed that Wardle would have interest in the Marquette coaching opening this offseason, but the Golden Eagles hired Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski on April 1.

“I’m very pleased with the team and the program and Brian and the staff,” Gillespie said. “We want them all here next year.”

The Phoenix went 24-7 last season, won the Horizon League regular-season title and made it to the National Invitation Tournament for the first time in 22 years. The 24 wins were the most under Wardle and represented six more than his previous best season in 2012-13.
