The nephew of a former NHL All-Star, Ryan Suter understands the stakes for himself this season — the year before he hits unrestricted free agency.

But he also knows how to deflect the distraction.

"Every year you come to camp focused on having your best year and a career year, and for me it's not different," Suter said. "I want to have a great year."

Suter's four-year, $14 million contract will expire July 1. That means if he does not re-sign with Nashville before that day he can sign with any NHL team with no compensation for the Predators.

Nearly 10 months in advance, Suter is not worried.
