Morneau added to long injured list

"This was supposed to be the week the Twins finally got healthy, and now Justin Morneau has landed on the disabled list, too.

Morneau has a strained left wrist, which will be immobilized in a cast for 10 days, General Manager Bill Smith said after Tuesday's game against the White Sox was postponed because of rain.

The Twins plan to announce a corresponding roster move Wednesday, after infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka (broken left fibula) and Glen Perkins (strained oblique) are re-evaluated at Target Field by team doctors.

So it's possible the Twins will activate Nishioka and Perkins from the DL, with Joe Mauer (bilateral leg weakness) possibly returning Friday, and others such as Denard Span (concussion), Jason Kubel (sprained left foot) and Jim Thome (strained quad) not far behind.

Still, without Morneau, the Twins will continue to play at less than full strength.

Smith said the doctors hope Morneau can quickly regain his range of motion in his wrist after the cast is removed.

"We're looking at this as a short-term event [for Morneau], but we will put him on the DL," Smith said.

Morneau is the 13th member of the 25-man Opening Day roster to land on the DL.

"Every team goes through injuries," Smith said. "We've had our share of them, and then some."

Morneau, 30, missed the final three months of the 2010 season because of a concussion, but this year he had been one of the few members of their A-lineup to avoid the DL. Unable to play since Thursday, Morneau had hand specialist Dr. Thomas Varecka review the results of his recent MRI exam Sunday, and Varecka recommended a cortisone shot."
