Montreal Canadiens stoned by Nikolai Khabibulin
Montreal Gazette | Nov 9
The Canadiens accomplished their goal of stopping Edmonton's kid line of Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but they had trouble getting the puck past goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and dropped a 3-1 decision to the Oilers. The 38-year-old Russian made 28 saves, but lost a bid for his third shutout of the season when Max Pacioretty scored at 16:50 of the third period. Pacioretty scored 22 seconds after Tom Gilbert beat Carey Price with a shot from the point that gave the Oilers a 2-0 lead. Ryan Jones scored a shorthanded goal in the second for the first score of the game. Ryan Smyth, another 38-year-old, completed the scoring with an empty-netter, his seventh goal of the season. The loss was the second in a row for the Canadiens, who dropped into 14th place in the Eastern Conference with 12 points. The good news? They are only four points out of a playoff spot. The victory kept the Oilers atop the Northwest Division with 20 points.
